Are we about to witness a significant icon redesign for Microsoft Office apps? Recent reports have sparked a lively debate among Microsoft users, particularly regarding the potential for a new, 3D-inspired look for these essential applications. The probable new design for Office apps features subtle yet noticeable changes, a departure from the last major update in 2018.

A recent report from Windows Central, based on information shared by a Reddit user, reveals an email survey from Microsoft showcasing these potential new icons. The proposed design overhaul of the Microsoft Office app icons emphasizes gradient use, 3D design, and effects. Compared to the previous icons, these new iterations boast softer, rounded corners and edges. This Microsoft Office design appears to embrace a “glassmorphism” aesthetic. These icon design changes aim to modernize the visual presentation, introducing greater depth and visual richness. While offering more diversity, the new icons maintain a consistent visual style, ensuring a cohesive look across the entire Microsoft Office suite.

It’s important to note that these new Microsoft Office icons have not yet been officially launched to the public. Microsoft is currently gauging user sentiment regarding the update, assessing whether it meets user expectations. These new icons represent a necessary step forward, as visual design trends evolve and app icons need to reflect those changes. The last significant icon update occurred in 2018.

This potential Office icon refresh is not an isolated initiative from the software giant; Microsoft recently introduced vibrant, color-coded battery icons to Windows 11. Furthermore, the company has announced that Office apps will no longer receive updates on Windows 10 after the October deadline. These strategic moves are widely interpreted as a concerted effort to encourage users to transition to Windows 11.
